Zanzibar Environmental Volunteers (ZAVECO) is a local nonprofit organization working in the
Islands focus on conservation of environment. For almost a decade they have been working in the
area of mangroves trees planting, environmental education and awareness. ZAVECO has
recognized the relationship of nature and culture in the sense that Nature and culture share a
complex, interconnected relationship, with each influencing and shaping the other. Nature
provides resources, inspiration, and a foundation for human culture, while culture shapes how
humans perceive, interact with, and modify the natural world. This relationship is not static and
varies across different cultures and historical period. This project is therefore intends to address
issues around environmental degradation, indigenous Knowledge in conservation and the impact
of modernization in both nature and culture.

Awareness on environmental conservation through music, arts and sports
Crop cultivation, composting, kitchen garden, medicinal plants cultivation and tree nursery
management.
Maintenance and management of organic garden.
Sites visit including meeting elder citizens for intergeneration knowledge exchange on
conservation of nature and culture.
Konaklama ve Yemek
Food: Food will be provided at the project accommodation. For sustainability reasons we will
most consume food harvested in the community/Region. However vegetarian meals will be
available. There is always a person to manage kitchen; however, volunteers are expected to
give hand in meals preparations.
Accommodation: Volunteers will be accommodated in the host family within the community
where basic accommodation facilities will be provided. Expect to share room with either host
family member or other volunteer from the same or other projects.
Konum ve Serbest Zaman
The project will be hosted in Kibele community, centra District of Zanzibar. The community is
located 20km away from stone town along the high way to South Zanzibar and can be easily
accessible by public and private transport. The community is a home of Zanzibar University
making it a fast-growing community. Due to its location it very easy to access most touristic site
and other social and economic service while volunteering.
Weekends and public holidays are free for volunteers. For volunteers engaging for a period of one
year, they will also have full holiday of thirty days. However, volunteer has freedom to choose what
they would like to do with their holidays. Possibilities are: -
Spice and historical sites visit
Swimming and other water recreational activities -blue safari
Spending time in beach and other small islands.

This project is looking for a volunteer who in love with Nature, interested to work outdoor, open
minded and interested in other cultures and local realities.
The project will be starting every first Monday of a month for smooth preparation of volunteers’
welcoming and training/orientation arrangements.
Minimum duration to participate on medium term voluntary service is four weeks and maximum
twelve weeks.
Medium term voluntary service volunteer is required to have Ordinary visa category A6. You can
consult Tanzania Immigration website on online application procedures. UVIKIUTA will provide
invitation letter and other supporting documents.
