Maputo City is the capital of Mozambique, located at the southernmost tip of the country, along the coast of the Indian Ocean. It is the country’s main political, economic, cultural, and administrative center.
In 2019, the city had an estimated population of about 1.17 million inhabitants. The municipality covers an area of 346.7 square kilometers and comprises 64 neighborhoods, which are organized into seven urban districts: KaMpfumu, KaMaxakeni, Nhlamankulu, KaMavota, KaMubukwana, KaTembe, and KaNyaka.

The Art Literacy Project for Children in the City of Maputo is an international volunteering initiative that uses art as an educational tool to promote creativity, expression, critical thinking and social inclusion. The project offers playful and pedagogical artistic activities adapted to the local context, while also encouraging intercultural exchange between volunteers and the community. More than teaching artistic techniques, the initiative seeks to strengthen children’s self-esteem and contribute to a more creative, conscious and transformative education.
The project will focus on participatory and gender-inclusive planning during the fieldwork. About fifteen to twenty volunteers will join in the learning. In the execution of the project, men and women will have the capacity to produce beds, prepare and work the land through techniques used in Agriculture.
