Zanzibar Environmental Volunteers (ZAVECO) is a community environmental organization aiming to protect, improve, and raise awareness about local environment through hands-on activities and education. ZAVECO’s work is addressing issues around pollution, marine habitat loss, Sea forestation and bee keeping, organic farming and encourage community involvement, empowerment, and a sense of responsibility for the local ecosystem

ZAVECO has recognized the relationship of nature and culture in the sense that Nature and culture share a complex, interconnected relationship, with each influencing and shaping the other. Nature provides resources, inspiration, and a foundation for human culture, while culture shapes how humans perceive, interact with, and modify the natural world. This relationship is not static and varies across different cultures and historical period. This project therefore intends to address issues around environmental degradation, indigenous knowledge in conservation and the impact of modernization in both nature and culture.
