Kuruluş
The municipality of Ascain, "Azkaine" in Basque, wants to renovate the former Terminen Muga sheepfold, which is located on a hiking trail, in the middle of the mountains and on the banks of a small stream. It is used all year round by local people, at weekends, to organise events for a day or an evening. It's a place where you can cook, camp and have access to water. You'll have the chance to sleep right on the spot, with only the 'pottoks' (horses from the Basque country) for companions.
İş Tanımı
Come and take part in the renovation of the old Terminen Muga sheepfold in the village of Ascain, in the heart of the mountains of the Basque Country! On the programme, we'll be redoing the entire roof, as well as painting and doing a bit of masonry to give a new lease of life to this very important site for the village and its inhabitants. You'll be accompanied by a technical guide who will show you how to rebuild and protect the stone walls.
Konaklama ve Yemek
You will have accommodation in individual tents, with sanitary facilities, kitchen and communal living room where you will find a very pretty view of the surrounding countryside. You will share the various collective tasks and prepare meals together. A budget will be allocated to the leaders, and you will help with the shopping and meal preparation, giving priority to healthy, local produce. WIFI available, laundry done by hand.
Together, you'll help organise community life (cleaning, activities, etc.) and take turns preparing meals using locally sourced produce. Our aim is to encourage vegetarian eating using local, seasonal produce, while respecting participants' diets and discovering local cuisine together.
Konum ve Serbest Zaman
The village of Ascain is located at the foot of the mountains and on the banks of the Nivelle river, which flows into the bay of Saint Jean de Luz 6km away. It is a typical Basque village with half-timbered houses. In the central square right next to the church,we find the front pediment, where Basque pelota players often gather. Ascain is not only the starting point for numerous hikes, the most famous of which is the Rhune, but is also just a 10-minute drive from the ocean and its beaches. The programme includes the village festival, which starts on 15 August, visits to the surrounding Basque villages, hiking and surfing.
Notlar
Don't forget to bring work clothes and shoes that won't get dirty.
In the mountains, despite the sunshine, the weather is surprising and can change rapidly.
For leisure activities, you'll need to pack clothes suited to the climate (warm fleece or jumper, shorts and hiking trousers, windbreaker, down jacket, warm socks, etc.). For hiking, high-top, notched shoes are recommended. Don't forget sun protection (a hat or cap is essential, sunglasses with a high protection factor because of the intense reflection, sun cream with a high protection factor IP 30-50, etc.) and a swimming costume for swimming or white-water activities.

For accommodation, remember to bring a warm sleeping bag and a towel. You should also bring a rucksack (in addition to your luggage), comfortable trainers and a pair of flip-flops. You'll also need to pack these essential accessories: a mobile phone charger, hiking poles (not compulsory, but recommended), a water bottle, a set of bandages and a headlamp or torch.
Social events will be organised in collaboration with our leaders and according to your wishes. In particular, we'll be organising themed evenings in each country. If you'd like to share a little of your culture (recipes, traditional stories, unusual objects, music, etc.), don't hesitate to take it with you.
