Mafia Youth Mission Center (MMYC) is a community-based facility designed to provide a safe, supportive, and engaging environment for young people. It offers a range of activities and programs that
foster personal growth, social development, and recreational opportunities for youth. It is designed to be welcoming and inclusive space, offering a place for young people to connect with peers, access
resources, and develop new skills. Environmental leadership is an experiential leadership program focusing on the big questions: Can we design sustainable communities for future? It is aiming to bring
participants to live and work together on the beautiful Island of Mafia and have the opportunity to explore the social, economic, spiritual and ecological issues and skills needed for developing sustainable
life practices.

The project is organized along five themes:
Holistic worldview: The big picture: why do we need to be developing sustainable communities? Listening to nature, celebrating life, discerning your role and creating your dream.
Ecological: Bioregionalism, defining a watershed, introduction to local food issues and permaculture techniques.
Social: Building and embracing diversity, introductory communication skills.
Economic: Shifting the global economy to sustainability, understanding the global versus local argument, analyzing your ecological foot print careers in sustainability.
Hands-on activities will include: Establishment and management of tree nursery at the Youth center to increase supply of various trees spices needed for conservation in the Island; Planting trees in
various open and public areas in the Island; Environmental cleaning and waste management in the public areas and sea show (Beach) including provision of garbage separation , and Climate change
education and awareness on Islands sustainability through workshops and other creative means including sports, arts, music and exhibitions.

Food: Food will be provided at the Youth Center. We will have a person managing the kitchen; however, volunteers are expected to join and give hand. For sustainability reasons, we will consume food which is available in the island/Region. However vegetarian meals will be available.
Accommodation: Volunteers will be accommodated at the Youth center hostels where basic accommodation facilities will be provided. Expect to share room other volunteers.

Mafia Island is one the administrative districts of Coast Region. Is located in the east coast of Tanzania opposite the delta of the Rufiji River. The 20 kilometers wide stretch of water between the delta and the island is called the Mafia Channel. Mafia Island is part of a small Tanzania’s Mafia archipelago in the Indian Ocean consists of one large island and several smaller islands. Surrounded by a protected marine park, the diving, fishing and snorkeling here are the best in the entire region. Mafia is truly an excellent destination for those wanting to spend a bit of time in the underwater world and interested in nature
and outdoor activities. Known for its location of the migratory Whale Sharks, spotting these magnificent creatures is an unforgettable experience of a lifetime. Mafia is a small town however most of social and economic service are available. Mafia Island can be reached by Air transport through Mafia Airport or Sea transport through Kilindoni Seaport.
Weekends and public holidays are free for volunteers. For volunteers engaging for a period of one year, they will also have full holiday of thirty days. However, volunteer has freedom to choose what they
would like to do with their holidays. There are so many options for leisure time in Mafia Islands.

This project is good for a person who enjoys working outdoors, willing to share leadership roles, and having a sense of adventure. It is also a good experience for those who are interested to other cultures, working with teens and adults, open minded, flexible and able to work under limited resources and minimum supervision.
This project will be starting every first Monday of a month for smooth preparation of volunteers’ welcoming and training/orientation arrangements.
Minimum participation duration in this project is four weeks and twelve weeks maximum. Volunteer will need to apply for an ordinary visa-category A6. Application will be done online. However, you will receive supporting documents immediately after placement confirmation.

The nearest bus/Ferry terminal is Kilindoni sea Port in the Mafia town. Connecting ferry to Mafia Island is at Nyamisati Port located South of Dar es Salaam city.
